Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n

The native Icelandic horse is the only breed in Iceland, purebred since the settlement. Due to geographic isolation the horses are immunologically naive to various agents known to infect horses in other countries. General knowledge about viral infections in the breed is important. The aim of the research was to study equine herpesviruses (EHV) in Iceland and construct tools for further research on equine viruses.<\/p>\n

Equine cell lines, both kidney and lung, with extended life span were established by transfection primary cells with an retroviral vector containing oncogenes. The cell lines can be passages approximately four times more oftan than the comparable primary cells. Specific EHV-2 and EHV-5 polyclonal antibodies were produced. Infectious fluorescent recombinant EHV-2 was constructed, rEHV2-gB-egfp, that expresses EGFP protein as a fusion protein with glycoprotein B. These tools can be of use in further research.<\/p>\n

The course of EHV-2 and EHV-5 infections and the antibody response against EHV-2 and EHV-5 was studied in details by following foals from birth to 22 months of age and their dams during the first 6 monts postpartum. Both EHV-2 and EHV-5 were isolated earlier than previously reported on day 5 and 12, respectively. Virus \u00a0<\/strong>specific antibodies were not detected before colostrum intake but peaked a few days after birth. The maternal antibodies declined when the foals were 3-4 months of age, followed by a peak in the EHV-2 viral load, whereas the EHV-5 viral load peaked when the foals were one years old. There was a notable correlation between the level of maternal antibodies on the one hand and the viral load and induction of endogenous antibody production in the foals on the other hand. These results provide information on how maternal antibody transfer affects EHV-2 and EHV-5 shedding and antibody production of the offspring, and also extends our knowledge on the EHV-2 and EHV-5 infection in foals during the first two years of life. Furthermore we isolated and confirmed, from a clinical sample, EHV-3 for the first time in our native population. Overall, the study provides deeper understanding of the EHV status in the Icelandic horse population.<\/p>\n

Fr\u00e1 \u00e1rinu 2018 hefur Lilja starfa\u00f0 \u00e1 bakter\u00edu-, sn\u00edkjud\u00fdra- og meinafr\u00e6\u00f0ideild Keldna m.a. vi\u00f0 ranns\u00f3knir \u00e1 s\u00fdklalyfja\u00f3n\u00e6mum bakter\u00edum. Foreldrar Lilju eru \u00deorsteinn G. Gunnarsson og Svanhv\u00edt Vatnsdal J\u00f3hannsd\u00f3ttir. Lilja er gift Magn\u00fasi Erni S\u00f6lvasyni.
