Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n

The overall aim of the study was to develop, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of a family strengths-oriented therapeutic conversation intervention for family caregivers of patients in the advanced stages of cancer. Also, to evaluate the impact on psychological distress symptoms and grief reactions when provided in the bereavement phase, as well as the long-term effect on these symptoms.<\/p>\n

The studies were quasi-experimental design studies with and without a longitudinal-experimental design. Measurements were conducted post-intervention. A repeated-measure analysis of variance (Study I), mixed models for repeated measures (Study II, III), a paired-sample t-test, and a Conventional Content Analysis (CCA) (Study IV) were used to analyze the data.<\/p>\n

The family caregivers perceived significant improvement in emotional and cognitive support, decrease in stress symptoms and caregiver burden after receiving the intervention (Study I). Also, significant improvement in the bereaved family caregivers\u2019 levels of anxiety symptoms and differences in grief reactions compared to bereaved family caregivers receiving traditional care (Study II), as well as long-term improvements in levels of stress and anxiety symptoms (Study III). An advanced education and coaching program in a family systems nursing approach was designed and delivered to nurses in the specialized palliative home care unit from where the study was conducted. The implementing of a systematic family nursing approach and the family-oriented intervention within the clinical palliative nursing practice was evaluated. Significant positive change was revealed in the nurses\u2019 attitudes towards including families in their care, after participating in the advanced educational and coaching intervention (Study IV).<\/p>\n

The overall results of the studies reveal how family caregivers of patients in the advanced stages of cancer receiving therapeutic conversations show significantly less emotional distress, when dealing with the complicated challenges they face. The results can be used to improve the quality of the services offered by healthcare professionals in specialized palliative home care.<\/p>\n
